Fashion is an industry that has embraced innovation. This gives it a huge advantage over other sectors in the transition to a circular economic system. Circular systems require circular feedstocks. Most countries lack a robust collection system and only recycle less than 1 percent of the current textiles.
The fashion industry is at a distinct advantage in the transition to a circular economic system.
A circular feedstock is needed for circular systems. Most countries lack robust collection systems, and as a result, less than 1 percent of textiles are estimated to be recycled. We know that when there are systems in place, high collection rates can be achieved. All parties involved, including the government, producers, and brands, can help facilitate the collection and supply of recyclable textiles. A growing number of brands are implementing in-store collections and closed-loop supply agreements. Recycling only one-quarter of the global pre-consumer textile and viscose waste could replace ‘all virgin tree fibre’ currently used in MMCF.
The brands are aware of the importance of ensuring that clothing and textiles are circular. Services (like in-store repairs) and business models that reduce overall clothing consumption will be offered alongside efforts to increase the sorting, reuse, and recycling of textiles.
